Say Goodbye to No-Refund Crypto Payments
Stablecoin payments—like those using USDC or DAI—have long operated like digital cash. Once a payment is made, it’s done. No refunds. No recourse. No real-world safety net. Until now.
Introducing Refund Protocol: a breakthrough smart contract solution that brings non-custodial escrow, refunds, and transparent dispute resolution into the stablecoin economy. Built for developers, startups, fintech apps, and global marketplaces, Refund Protocol empowers secure payments while keeping full custody in the hands of users.
What Is Refund Protocol?
Refund Protocol is a non-custodial smart contract system that enables:
- Onchain dispute resolution for ERC-20 stablecoin transactions
- Time-bound escrow periods
- Arbiter-mediated refunds and early withdrawals
- Lockups and offchain agreement enforcement
It’s a developer-first framework that doesn’t rely on traditional custodians or centralised intermediaries—and that’s the game-changer.
Why Stablecoin Payments Need a Refund Layer
In traditional eCommerce, if your hiking boots arrive worn out, your bank has your back. Chargebacks exist. But in Web3? A stablecoin transaction is final. If the seller ghosts you—too bad.
That’s the gap Refund Protocol closes. It provides the crypto-native equivalent of a dispute process, without centralised control or loss of custody.
The Flawed Solution: Centralised Arbiters
Sure, we could just let an all-powerful third party control an escrow wallet and resolve disputes. But then we’ve recreated the same trust system crypto was designed to disrupt. Centralised arbiters are:
- Fully custodial
- Vulnerable to bias, fraud or failure
- A bottleneck for decentralised applications
Instead, Refund Protocol takes a non-custodial approach—preserving the security and autonomy of Web3 users.
How Refund Protocol Works
Let’s break down the full lifecycle of a payment using Refund Protocol.
1. The Payment
The customer sends stablecoins using a pay() function. The funds are sent to a smart contract, not directly to the seller. The contract records:
- Recipient address
- Payment value
- Refund address
Funds remain locked until the dispute window passes or the issue is resolved.
2. The Refund Options
If something goes wrong (e.g., a faulty product or no delivery), the refund process can go two ways:
- Voluntary Refund by Seller: The seller can trigger a
refundByRecipient()function. - Dispute Escalation to Arbiter: If the seller refuses, the arbiter can refund the buyer using
refundByArbiter().
Importantly, neither party has direct control over the funds—the arbiter cannot send them anywhere except the designated refund address.
3. Standard Withdrawal
If the lockup period expires and there’s no dispute, the recipient can withdraw the funds freely via the smart contract.
4. Early Withdrawal (With Offchain Agreement)
Need the funds before the lockup ends? The arbiter can enable early withdrawals—but only with the recipient’s cryptographic signature on the terms (fee, timing, etc.). That way, the process is still consent-based and onchain verifiable.
Developer Power Tools Inside Refund Protocol
Refund Protocol offers three major tools for developers:
- Escrow with Lockups
Funds are locked for a defined time to allow disputes to be raised. No one can touch them during this window. - Non-Custodial Arbiter Controls
Arbiters can only refund or release funds to pre-approved addresses—not their own. - Programmable Withdrawal Logic
Support for both standard and early withdrawals, verified with EIP-712 signatures.
Key Use Cases
- Decentralised Marketplaces: Add buyer protection without losing your decentralised edge.
- SaaS and Service Subscriptions: Enable secure, refundable crypto payments for freelancers or software tools.
- Cross-border B2B Transactions: Remove friction from international trades and mitigate counterparty risk.
- Crypto eCommerce: Give your customers the confidence of Web2 with the speed and privacy of Web3.
Considerations & Limitations
1. Arbiter Abuse Risk
A malicious arbiter could create fake disputes. Solution? Appoint known, auditable arbiters with public performance records or stake-based systems.
2. Custodial Wallet Challenges
If a user pays via a custodial wallet or fiat onramp, assigning a refund address can be tricky. This may require wallet integrations or arbiter intervention.
3. Gas Usage
Each Refund Protocol transaction requires additional gas, especially during withdrawals. Batching helps, but costs still rise linearly with transaction volume.
4. Yield Opportunity
Idle funds in escrow could earn yield. Integrations with DeFi lending protocols like Aave or Compound are possible—and could benefit both payers and arbiters.
5. Smart Wallet Support
Current implementation assumes EOA wallets for signature verification. Developers can extend it to support smart contract wallets via EIP-1271.
