Our Data & Storage Strategy with Node.js (2025 Edition)

Modern systems live or die by their data architecture. At Digital One Agency, Node.js is the orchestration layer that sits across OLTP databases, caches, streams, search engines, vector stores, and warehouses. We choose the right tool for the job, then wire them together with idempotent APIs, transactional guarantees, and auditable event streams.
Primary OLTP: PostgreSQL first (with room for specialisation)
When we need ACID guarantees and rich SQL features, we default to PostgreSQL.
Why:
- Strong transactional semantics for fintech, payments, escrow, and marketplace balances.
- Native JSONB for semi-structured payloads without giving up SQL.
- Partitioning + logical replication for scale and high availability.
- RLS (Row-Level Security) to implement safe multitenancy without separate databases per tenant.
- Extensions:
pg_partman(partitioning),pgcrypto(encryption),pg_stat_statements(tuning),pgvector(AI retrieval). - Time-series via TimescaleDB when needed (retention, compression, continuous aggregates).
How we use it with Node.js:
- Drivers:
pgwith prepared statements and server-side cursors for large reads. - Connection pooling: pgbouncer/pgpool; application-level pools are sized to avoid event loop starvation.
- Migrations: Prisma/Drizzle typed schemas, repeatable migrations, and automated rollback plans.
- Isolation choices:
SERIALIZABLEfor money movement/ledger writes,REPEATABLE READfor complex reads,SELECT … FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKEDfor job workers.
Pattern: Double-entry ledger (immutable journal + derived balances) for payments/stablecoins. Idempotency enforced with a unique
idempotency_key; retries are safe.
When we choose other SQL engines
- MySQL/MariaDB: ultra-high read throughput with read replicas; simpler operational footprint for certain workloads.
- SQL Server: enterprise environments with existing MSFT stacks or specific analytics/SSIS pipelines.
Caching & queues: Redis as the system’s nervous system
We use Redis for:
- Hot data caching (TTL, negative caching, cache-aside).
- Rate limiting with token buckets or leaky buckets per key.
- Distributed locks (Redlock) to protect critical sections.
- Job orchestration with BullMQ / queues per service.
- Real-time streams (Redis Streams) for light pub/sub and consumer groups.
Node.js pairing:
- Client of choice:
ioredisfor robust cluster/sentinel support. - Strong patterns: cache stampede control, soft TTLs (serve stale-while-revalidate), per-tenant namespacing.
Operational analytics & search: Elasticsearch / OpenSearch
For log search, observability queries, text relevance, and operational analytics dashboards we deploy Elasticsearch/OpenSearch clusters.
- Use cases: marketplace search, KYC/AML evidence search, error forensics, audit trails.
- Node.js integration:
@elastic/elasticsearchclient, index templates with strict mappings, write-ahead outbox → consumer → index to avoid dual-write anomalies. - Tuning: refresh intervals per index (fast vs cost-optimised), lifecycle policies (hot/warm/cold tiers).
Event streaming: Kafka (or NATS/RabbitMQ where appropriate)
Kafka is our go-to for high-throughput, ordered event pipelines:
- Use cases: payment events, KYC/KYB status changes, IoT telemetry ingress, trading signal fan-out, CDC replication to downstream stores.
- Node.js:
kafkajswith exactly-once semantics at the application level (transactional outbox + consumer idempotency). - Governance: Schema Registry (Avro/Protobuf), versioned events, contract tests, dead-letter topics.
When we need simpler patterns or very low latency control paths, we’ll use NATS; for durable work queues with routing keys, RabbitMQ is practical.
NoSQL options: document, wide-column, and time-series
- MongoDB: rapid iteration on document-centred domains (e.g., user preferences, dynamic forms, metadata blobs).
- Node pairing: native driver with strict schema validation, TTL indexes for ephemeral docs, change streams to trigger async work.
- Cassandra/ScyllaDB: write-heavy, linearly scalable workloads (e.g., telemetry, append-only events with predictable keys).
- We use them when the data model maps cleanly to partition/cluster keys and we need near-constant write latency at scale.
- InfluxDB/TimescaleDB: high-ingest time-series (IoT vending networks, device health, trading ticks).
- Node publishes to the stream; rollups/retention policies keep storage lean.
Graph databases for relationships & AML
- Neo4j (or graph extensions in Postgres for lighter needs) power relationship-first queries:
- Detect rings, shared IPs, device co-usage across wallets or accounts.
- Node.js uses the Neo4j driver with read/write routing and k-hop traversal for investigation tooling.
Vector search for AI experiences
For RAG and semantic search we deploy two patterns:
- pgvector in PostgreSQL – best when vectors and OLTP records must remain transactionally consistent (e.g., knowledge bases with strict tenancy & audit).
- Dedicated vector DB (e.g., Milvus/Weaviate) – when corpus size and recall SLAs demand specialised ANN indexes and independent scaling.
Node.js flow:
- Embedder service (LLM) → upsert vectors with metadata/tenancy → similarity search on request → guardrails & policy filters → answer synthesis.
Warehousing & BI
For heavy analytics, forecasting, and financial reconciliation, we land data into a cloud warehouse (columnar store).
Patterns:
- CDC (Debezium) from Postgres/MySQL → Kafka → warehouse.
- Star/Snowflake schemas for consistent reporting.
- Node.js runs orchestrators for ELT jobs, dimensional upserts, and SLA checks; BI surfaces via dashboards.
Consistency, correctness & safety patterns (the stuff that saves you later)
- Transactional Outbox: database write + event stored atomically; an outbox relay publishes to Kafka. No more dual-write races.
- Sagas: long-running workflows (KYC, payout, account opening) coordinated across services; compensations modelled explicitly.
- Idempotency keys everywhere: API, queue consumers, ledger entries.
- Unique constraints beat “at-least-once” duplicates.
- Soft-deletes + immutable audit for compliance.
- Per-tenant encryption (envelope encryption; rotate data keys via KMS/HSM).
- PII minimisation: hash or tokenise; store the minimum; segregate access paths.
Performance & reliability tactics that pair well with Node.js
- Avoid event-loop blocking: offload CPU-heavy tasks to worker threads/sidecars.
- Backpressure: stream reads/writes, don’t buffer unbounded payloads.
- Prepared statements + plan management in Postgres;
EXPLAIN ANALYSEbaked into CI for key queries. - Hot path caching with stale-while-revalidate and teeny TTLs (100–500 ms) where acceptable.
- SLOs with OpenTelemetry: RED/USE metrics, trace-based alerts, per-tenant dashboards.
- Backups & DR: point-in-time recovery, periodic restore tests, RPO/RTO codified.
Example blueprints we ship (Node.js + the right data stores)
1) Payments & Stablecoin Rails (incl. AUDD/USDT/USDC connectors)
- Node.js API (Fastify/NestJS, TypeScript)

- Redis for ultra-fast dedupe/windows; Influx/Timescale for tick history
- Kafka → risk engine → order router
- PostgreSQL for fills, PnL, audit, and regulatory export
Tech stack highlights we lean on with Node.js
- Frameworks: Fastify/NestJS/Express (depending on SLA), tRPC/GraphQL for typed contracts.
- Data access: Prisma or Drizzle (typed), Knex (query builder), direct drivers for hot paths.
- Messaging: KafkaJS, amqplib (RabbitMQ), NATS.js.
- Observability: OpenTelemetry, Prometheus exporters, structured logs (JSON), correlation IDs.
- Security: mTLS between services, JWKs for token validation, KMS-backed secret rotation.
