How Does AI Work? The Truth Behind ChatGPT and Modern Artificial Intelligence

Contents

By Digital One Agency

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere. It’s recommending what show to watch next, answering your emails, filtering spam, guiding your GPS, and—if you’re reading this on our blog—likely helping you write, code, market, or grow your business through tools like ChatGPT. But what’s actually going on under the hood?

At Digital One Agency, we don’t just use AI—we build with it. We integrate it into mobile apps, websites, CRMs, fintech platforms, and marketplaces. But we often get asked:
“How does AI really work?”
“What powers ChatGPT?”
“Is it just some big fancy chatbot, or is it smarter than that?”

So buckle in. In this post, we’re pulling back the curtain to explain how AI—especially language models like ChatGPT—functions from a technical, practical, and even philosophical point of view.

1. The Basics: What Even Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines—especially computer systems. These processes include:

  • Learning (acquiring information and rules)
  • Reasoning (applying rules to reach conclusions)
  • Self-correction (improving over time)
  • Perception (understanding vision, sound, etc.)

But most of today’s AI isn’t some general-purpose brain that can do everything. It’s narrow AI: extremely powerful, but trained to perform specific tasks like language translation, image recognition, or customer service.

So when people talk about “AI” today, they’re usually referring to machine learning, especially deep learning systems built with neural networks.

2. Enter Machine Learning: Teaching Computers to Learn

Machine Learning (ML) is the method by which computers learn without being explicitly programmed. Instead of giving the computer a rulebook, we give it data—lots of it.

Think of ML like training a dog. You don’t explain what “sit” means. You say “sit,” show the action, give a treat. Eventually, the dog associates the word with the behaviour. Similarly, AI models are trained by feeding them examples (inputs) and desired outputs.

Machine learning falls into three main categories:

  • Supervised Learning: You give the AI labelled examples (e.g., “This is a cat,” “This is a dog”) and it learns the patterns.
  • Unsupervised Learning: You give it unlabelled data, and it figures out the structure or patterns on its own (e.g., customer segmentation).
  • Reinforcement Learning: The AI learns by trial and error, getting rewards or penalties—like training a game-playing agent.

Now, let’s take it up a notch.

3. Deep Learning: Neural Networks on Steroids

Deep Learning is a subset of ML that uses artificial neural networks with many layers—hence the “deep.”

A neural network is loosely inspired by the human brain. It has:

  • Input layer (data goes in)
  • Hidden layers (where the magic happens)
  • Output layer (prediction or classification)

Each “neuron” in the network performs calculations and passes its result to the next layer. Through millions of examples, the network learns to associate patterns with outcomes.

This is the core of how ChatGPT and other large language models work.

4. Meet Transformers: The Architecture Behind ChatGPT

While neural networks were powerful, they struggled with long sequences—like understanding full paragraphs or conversations. Enter Transformers, a breakthrough architecture introduced by Google in 2017.

Transformers allowed models to:

  • Process entire sequences of text at once, instead of step-by-step.
  • Pay attention to context, using “attention mechanisms” to weigh which words matter most in a sentence.

For example:
In the sentence “The dog chased the cat, but it got away”—“it” could refer to the cat or the dog. Transformers use attention to figure out what “it” probably refers to.

This architecture enabled massive breakthroughs in NLP (Natural Language Processing), powering models like:

  • GPT-2 and GPT-3 by OpenAI
  • BERT by Google
  • LLaMA by Meta
  • Claude by Anthropic

5. What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a Large Language Model (LLM) developed by OpenAI. The latest version, GPT-4, is a transformer-based model trained on massive amounts of text from the internet.

ChatGPT’s brain doesn’t “understand” language the way humans do. It statistically predicts the next word in a sentence based on its training.

For example, if you say:
“I’m going to the beach to swim in the…”
ChatGPT predicts the next word might be “ocean” or “sea” based on training data.

That might sound simple, but the model has seen billions of examples, and its predictions are guided by 175+ billion parameters in GPT-3 and even more in GPT-4.

The result? Surprisingly fluent, creative, and useful responses.

6. How Is ChatGPT Trained?

Training ChatGPT involved three main stages:

a) Pretraining

OpenAI fed the model a massive dataset of text (books, websites, code, Wikipedia, news, etc.) and trained it to predict the next word in a sentence. This is called unsupervised learning.

b) Fine-tuning

Next, OpenAI fine-tuned the model on curated datasets to make it more useful and safe. This used supervised learning with human-written Q&A examples.

c) Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF)

This is the secret sauce. Humans ranked model responses from best to worst, and a reward model was trained on that data. Then, reinforcement learning guided the model to produce more helpful and less toxic responses.

That’s why ChatGPT isn’t just a parrot—it’s been trained to be helpful, harmless, and honest (to the best of its abilities).

7. Limitations: What AI Can’t Do Yet

Let’s bust some myths.

  • AI doesn’t “understand” like humans. It doesn’t have emotions, goals, or consciousness.
  • It can make mistakes. Sometimes confidently. These are called “hallucinations.”
  • It can be biased, depending on training data.
  • It can’t browse the internet in real-time, unless enabled with external tools.
  • It’s not always up-to-date, unless connected to a live data source.

This is why businesses should use AI as an assistant, not a decision-maker. At Digital One Agency, we often pair AI outputs with human oversight.

8. Real Business Applications (That We Build)

Here’s where things get exciting. ChatGPT and AI can be customised and embedded into:

  • Customer service bots (trained on your FAQs and helpdesk)
  • Internal tools (HR, legal, accounting)
  • CRM systems (automated email replies, lead scoring)
  • Fintech apps (document verification, fraud detection)
  • Legal tech (contract summarisation, legal clause review)
  • Healthcare (symptom triage, patient interaction tools)
  • Real estate (listing generation, virtual agents)
  • Education (AI tutors, automated marking)

At Digital One Agency, we help companies deploy customised GPT-based models, either via OpenAI APIs or using local/private models (for security).

9. Behind the Curtains: Infrastructure and Compute

Running models like ChatGPT requires:

  • Massive GPU farms (primarily NVIDIA A100 or H100 chips)
  • Distributed cloud computing (usually Azure, AWS, or GCP)
  • Data pipelines for preprocessing, training, and monitoring

This isn’t your average website backend. A single forward pass through GPT-4 might involve trillions of operations. That’s why OpenAI charges for API usage and why models are so expensive to host at scale.

Want to run your own version? You’ll need deep pockets, or you can work with us to build lightweight, task-specific AI models that don’t require OpenAI.

10. The Future of AI

AI isn’t slowing down. We’re entering an era of:

  • Multimodal AI: Models that understand images, audio, and video alongside text (already here with GPT-4o).
  • Agent-based AI: Models that can plan, browse, take actions across systems.
  • Private AI: Models trained only on your business data, hosted privately for security and compliance.
  • On-device AI: Running AI locally on phones or IoT devices.
  • Regulated AI: Governments are introducing guardrails to ensure safety, privacy, and fairness.

For businesses, this means a growing competitive gap between companies that adopt AI—and those that don’t.
