From Bitcoin Miner to Blockchain Pioneer: The Story of Ken Armitt, Australia’s Original Bitcoin Adopter

Plenty of people claim they were early to Bitcoin. Very few actually were. Fewer still rolled up their sleeves and helped build the infrastructure that turned a fringe experiment into a global financial movement.
Ken Armitt was one of the genuine originals.
It Started in 2011, Before Anyone Was Watching
The story begins in late 2011, when Bitcoin was still an obscure idea traded between coders, cryptographers and a handful of curious early adopters in IRC chatrooms and online forums. The public assumed it was a scam. The banks called it criminal. But a small group of people—Ken among them—recognised it for what it really was: the start of something that would change how the world thinks about money, trust and technology.
In those days, mining Bitcoin had nothing to do with the giant corporate data centres and warehouse-scale ASIC farms we see today. It was hands-on, improvised and personal. Ken built custom rigs from roughly $5,000 worth of high-end graphics cards, tuning every fan curve and BIOS setting to coax out a little more hashing power. The electricity bills were punishing, the heat off the GPUs was relentless, and the software broke constantly—but it was the frontier, and Ken was all in.
Building Australia’s First Bitcoin Exchange
Mining was never going to be enough for Ken. He wanted to build the ecosystem around it.
While most Australians still assumed “Bitcoin” was some kind of video-game token, Ken was quietly working behind the scenes to build what would become Australia’s first Bitcoin exchange. At a time when PayPal would freeze your account for so much as mentioning crypto, and banks would close your accounts on suspicion alone, launching an exchange meant taking on real regulatory and financial risk.
He pushed through anyway. Through code, compliance battles and patient community building, Ken helped lay the first rails for crypto trading in Australia—long before “fintech” was a word anyone used.
Living Through Mt. Gox and the Wild West Years
Ken remembers the first major Mt. Gox hack as if it were yesterday. Bitcoin’s price collapsed, confidence evaporated overnight, and critics lined up to declare the whole thing finished. Most people would have walked away. Ken didn’t.
If anything, the chaos deepened his conviction in the underlying technology. He kept building, kept mining, and kept advising. While much of the media wrote crypto off as a passing fad, Ken was already consulting on early token projects—some of which would go on to be worth billions—and getting to know the people who were shaping the industry from the inside.
The Real Pioneers of Crypto
To Ken, names like Roger Ver, Erik Voorhees and Charlie Shrem were never just headlines or video thumbnails. They were peers and fellow pioneers.
- Roger Ver – often criticised, but a genuine believer in the idea of a decentralised world. “Roger was a great guy—still is,” says Ken.
- Erik Voorhees – one of the sharpest and most principled entrepreneurs in the space.
- Charlie Shrem – brilliant, and in many ways a casualty of being too early in a world that wasn’t ready for him.
These were the original builders and risk-takers. “Back then,” Ken recalls, “people looked at you like you were from another planet when you talked about Bitcoin. Today you mention Bitcoin and suddenly everyone’s an expert. But in the early days, you were the odd one out—the one taking the risk nobody else would.”
From Outsiders to Wall Street’s Favourite Asset
In the early 2010s, crypto was the outsider of the internet. Payment platforms banned it. Bankers wouldn’t return calls. Governments floated laws designed specifically to shut Bitcoin businesses down. And yet here we are today, with nearly every major investment bank on Wall Street pitching Bitcoin ETFs, tokenised assets and decentralised finance as “the future.”
The people who were proven right were the builders and the grinders who stuck it out—the ones who endured:
- Public exposure and doxxing
- De-banking
- Government threats
- Hacks and attacks
- Media ridicule
- Social exclusion
They didn’t stop, because they understood where the technology was heading.
Riding the Boom: Ethereum, Stablecoins and DeFi
When Ethereum launched, Ken saw the next chapter clearly. Crypto was no longer just about money—it was about programmable finance. Smart contracts, decentralised exchanges, NFTs and DAOs set off an explosion of new ideas.
Ken began advising on Ethereum-based projects, helping businesses tokenise assets, launch stablecoins and build DeFi infrastructure before any of those were household terms. He watched the rise of USDT, USDC and other stablecoins closely, recognising early that they would become the plumbing of a new financial system. He was right.
Today he is still actively consulting, building and investing, while also helping governments, institutions, family offices and fintech founders find their way through this fast-moving landscape.
Mainstream, But Still Misunderstood
For all its growth, blockchain is still widely misunderstood by traditional business—especially in Australia. Ken believes most of the market still doesn’t truly grasp it, and that is exactly where he and his team add value.
Through Digital One Agency and Digital One Payments, Ken now helps clients:
- Build and audit tokenised ecosystems
- Launch fully compliant stablecoins
- Integrate crypto payment rails for global businesses
- Architect KYC/KYB solutions for next-generation DeFi and TradFi
- Advise VCs and family offices on blockchain investment strategy
- Create smart contracts, DeFi dApps and layer-2 scaling solutions
- Embed compliance, trust and AI into real-world blockchain deployments
Whether it’s Ethereum, Ripple, Hedera, Solana or building something entirely new, Ken has seen it all and done most of it.
Legacy, Grit and What Comes Next
Ken’s journey is a living record of how far this industry has come—and a clear signal of where it’s going.
“The ones who stuck it out—through the crashes, hacks, lawsuits, bans and noise—are the ones worth trusting now. We didn’t jump on the hype train in 2021. We built the track it’s running on.”
Blockchain is no longer a “maybe.” It’s becoming essential. If you’re a business, startup, government body or fintech founder wondering where to begin, Ken Armitt and his team at Digital One have already been there, done it, and are busy building what comes next.
